The Aequitas Social Justice Choir was awesome, yes it’s true that no account lead singer (me…) muffed the first verse of the first song.
But then we pulled together and delivered the first three songs with a lot of positive energy.
“People Get Ready”
“I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” by U2
“Oh Happy Day” by Edwin Hawkins (who passed away only a few days ago.)
Edwin Reuben Hawkins (August 19, 1943 – January 15, 2018) was an American gospel musician, pianist, choir master, composer, and arranger. He was one of the originators of the urban contemporary gospel sound. He was probably best known for his arrangement of “Oh Happy Day.” (1968–69)
It was a great start to the evening and allowed us to launch into our regular R&B dance tunes. And most importantly we filled the dance floor!
The bottom line is this:
We had a ton of fun. (well, at least I certainly did…)
Everyone played well.
I got to play with people I really like!
We actually SOLD OUT!
We presented something musically that was just a little out of the ordinary.
We supported a very worthwhile charity.
… and we raised over $8,000! (It’s true!!! at this moment in time we are actually closing in on $8,500..)
By the way, to anyone who isn’t aware, all of the money raised went straight to the Surrey Food Bank!
For the record I’m exceedingly grateful to all who supported us. That includes the musicians, hotel staff, the choir, our sponsors and our wonderful guests!
Particularly I’d like to thank our band, Agent C and Top Secret who have continued come together year after year and have worked so hard to make Blues for the Bank a success since 2006.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!
